History of Trinity Op Shops

John's Place is the second Op Shop that has been run by Trinity Methodist Church in Napier.
From a report written in 1993
"On 24th April 1972 several of the church folk held a meeting to discuss the possibility of opening a Thrift Shop in Napier based on existing ventures in Palmerston North, Gisborne & Hastings.
18th July 1972 there is no difficulty over staffing a suitable shop but 2 complications have arisen - 1. Scinde Lions had opened one already &
2- Finding a suitable shop.
On 5th September 1972 the doors were opened for business at 1 Clive Square West (just the other side of Clive Square).
As if often the case there were some folk who declared we wouldn't make a success of it & gave us 3 months to prove ourselves. After 21 years it would seem we have done just that."

They remained there until 21st July 1981 when the building was sold & after much searching, a new home was found on the corner of Carlyle & Faraday Streets. (north-west corner & now a car yard).

The Goodwill Centre as it was known continued into the 21st Century however the minutes for the Napier Methodist Parish Meeting on 3rd October 2007 records "It has been agreed by the helpers at the Goodwill Centre that the Centre ceases operating on its present site at the end of the year. The condition of the building is considered to have become unsuitable for the use by the Centre".
More meetings & investigations were held to see if the Centre could continue at another premise.

On 30th June 2008 after almost 36 years of service to the people of Napier, the Napier Methodist Goodwill Centre closed its doors for the last time.

In that time it met many needs including the provision of good quality clothing at affordable prices; making funds available for the church & community; providing a listening ear for those who needed to have someone to talk to: and providing an environment for staff to be with others as they volunteered their time in the community.
